Movie Review: The Business of Being Born

When I was researching natural birth after having my first child, I’m not sure how I didn’t come across this film. When this film was first mentioned to me I was so excited to see it I went and downloaded it on iTunes and watched it that day. It was as good as I had hoped.

A well presented film about the problems with American maternity care that does not simply demonize all things medical. This film was entertaining and well put together but still presented facts in a mostly unbiased way. They interviewed a wide variety of qualified individuals. Among the people interviewed was a personal hero of mine, Dr Marsden Wagner. He is the author of, Born in the USA: How a Broken Maternity System Must be Fixed to Put Women and Children First. He is so knowledgeable and the facts he presents are always so mind blowing to me! The film was a definite hit for me.

I personally wish that all health courses that teach about labor and delivery added this film to the list of required videos to watch. As a doula in Utah I encourage everyone to educate themselves with this film.

So many people have watched and loved this film since 2008 that the makers decided to make a series called More Business of Being Born. This series was designed to help answer some of the questions that people had after seeing The Business of Being Born.
